Dual Kingdom of Scotland and Norway.

We've had the occasional thread abut a survving Maid of Norway, but afaik none where it is her *mother*, daughter of Alexander III, who survives the childbbirth..

If she does, and she and Eric go on to have more children, perhaps including a son, then (if Alex III's accident isn't butterflied away) we find ourselves with a "dual monarchy" of Scotland and Norway.

Where might we go from there? Does a continuing Norwegian line buterfly awy the Union of Kalmar, or does it still emerge, now including Scotland was well? Amd how does it get on with England? Does Edward I still invade, or do we get some dynastic intermarriage between England and Scotland-Norway. Thoughts anyone?

Edwards invasion is very much butterflied he may try an alliance to keep his northern border secure

Fwiu Edward was close with his neice so no invasion, a marriage is definitely possible tho. Eric should probably get rid of the Bruce and Comyn rivalry sometime soon. Edward probably calls for a Crusade ttl.

Indeed. This TL may also butterfly the Maid of Norway's own death. As her mother, not she, is Queen of Scots, he may remain in Norway until she is older. Even if not, they probably sail on a different day, and if she has an easier voyage than OTL she may survive. In this case, a marriage to the future Edward II could still happen. If she has a brother, Union with England won't automaticallyresult but it still has momentous consequences.

Above all the Edward III of OTL is never born. There may still be a son of that name, but he'll be a different person - and of course the she-wolf of France will be out of the picture, so Ed II may get to die of old age. It also takes away the Plantagenet claim to the throne of France, so no Hundred Years War as we know it. Alternatively, though, we might get wars in Scandinavia. There would also be no Bruce invasion of Ireland.

Historical footnote. OTL, Ed III and Philippa of Hainault were the first descendants of Harold Godwinsson to sit on the English throne. And this will remain true TTL, as Erik II of Norway,is the grandson of Erik IV "Ploughpenny" of Denmark, who is also a descendant of Harold II.

Very interesting. This is early enough I don't think you will have strong nationalist pressures to break up the union. Some interesting possibilities long term.
