Q: Less populated France if remained united with HRE (East Francia)?

In an eventual scenario where France (West Francia) would have remained united with East Francia, would France have been such populated as it was IOTL or maybe the union (which could have meant a minor degree of feudalization and stronger imperialism) would have triggered more internal migration to the more underpopulated (and land available) East?

It depends. Who's advertising this land? Who's paying to transport these people? Etc.

Furthermore, just because people emigrate away from the West, doesn't mean that it becomes underpopulated even compared to OTL, as there would still be a significant population left behind who would quickly fill in the carrying capacity for those that left.

Can't forget pre-modern times and their universally high fertility rates.

Basically, for it to become underpopulated, you can't just look at what's taking people away but also why losses aren't being replaced.
