WI Flu In 1916?

Have jut been watching a very interesting doc on PBS America, about the 1918 flu epidemic. Seems they think it may have started in western Kansas, of all places.

If so, is there any way it could have got started a couple of years earlier -sometime in 1916 - and if so any thoughts on possible consequences?

I've seen programs which give evidence that the flu was present in base camps behind the allied line In the winter of 1916. It's suggested that it began by jumping from the pigs being kept for slaughter.
